Masks of the World

The middle school is making masks. 

At the start of the project students brainstormed different examples of who wears masks and for what reason. We listed many jobs and hobbies that require masks for protection, from scuba divers to surgeons. Discussion ensued on the difference between a robber wearing a mask and a superhero’s mask. If you want to hide your identity why not wear a blank mask? We decided that a mask can be used to hide your identity and help create a new identity at the same time. In this discussion it became apparent that we knew only a little about masks in other cultures. 

Working in mixed grade pairs, students researched a given mask from a different culture across the globe. These masks were used in rites of passage, religious ceremonies, to guard and protect or to invite and welcome. Students learned of different geographical artistic traditions, where mask makers use locally available materials and pigments. We made a replica of this mask using plaster gauze.

As we near the end of this project students have designed their own masks with a backstory giving the reason it would be worn. Some are full face masks, other only cover the eyes. Some designs follow the contours of the face, while others are accentuated with horns or ears. Before Thanksgiving each mask will be created, a blend of sculpture and painting.
