Students practice these skills in their classes through project based learning, inquiry based learning, exhibitions and presentations.
For example, when students are working on their exhibitions, they are critically and creatively thinking about how to present their information using their computers which also demonstrates technology literacy. They are practicing information and media literacy as they research their topic online. As they use different programs (technology literacy), they are exercising flexibility and productivity.
Group projects using computers also incorporate many of these skills and also include collaboration, social skills and leadership.
Besides incorporating 21st century skills with technology, we also teach in the middle school how to interact with it responsibly. Through a curriculum developed by Commonsense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/curriculum) we teach 6th grade digital safety, 7th grade digital citizenship and 8th grade digital literacy.
As technology becomes more prevalent in everyday life, we want to make sure our students are well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
