Physical Education: Winter Term and Beyond

The Mustard Seed students are hard at work once again! In physical education classes, we have been focusing on developing our cardiovascular fitness. The students have increased their flexibility, core strength, and muscular endurance. Everyone worked as a team during dynamic stretching drills and timed runs throughout the winter. This unit reached an apex when the students participated in the PACER (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) test.
Additionally, students worked on a volleyball unit where the focus was developing the fundamental skills of the sport in order to translate their skills into regulation game situations. Each student had the opportunity to work on forearm passes (bump), overhand passes (set), and serving. The students played some very exciting and intense matches down to the wire! In the spring, we will be working on badminton, soccer, kickball, and wiffle ball units. To finish the year, we will be taking the much anticipated Presidential Fitness Test. The test includes five events that measure muscular strength/endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, speed, agility, and flexibility. The test will be done in five sections:

• 1-Mile Run
• Crunches
• Pushups
• Shuttle Run Test
• Sit-and-Reach Test

The Presidential Physical Fitness Award
This award recognizes youth who achieve an outstanding level of physical fitness. Boys and girls who score at or above the 85th percentile of qualifying standards on all five events are eligible for this award.

The National Physical Fitness Award
This award is for those who score at or above the 50th percentile on all five events, but fall below the 85th percentile in one or more of the events. This demonstrates a basic, yet challenging, level of physical fitness.

The Participant Physical Fitness Award
Those whose scores fall below the 50th percentile on two or more events receive this award for participating in the Physical Fitness Test.
