Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson
There are three main characters Isabel, Curzon, and Ruth. They all wanted a few things. Isabel wanted her parents back and so does Ruth, her sister. Curzon wanted the north to win the war. Another thing Isabel and Ruth wanted was freedom. Curzon wanted that to. What they all wanted is a happy life.
They all can't have freedom because they are slave. But Isabel should be free. Because her old master died. And in his will he said they should be free. I think the climax is when she breaks out of the box. She is in a box because she got caught making trips to prison. It is tense and you wonder if she's going to get caught. That is climax.
When she breaks out she does escape. Then she goes to the prison to break Curzon out. Then they both escape. But the end does leave you wondering. Because what happened to Ruth? I hope she got free. I think it is a sad ending because she doesn't know if were ruth is.

Chains is about a slave girl named Isabel living in the time of the revolutionary war. Isabel originally lived with her mother in a small village. Her mother passed away so Isabel and her sister (Ruth) changed owners. There owner was very cruel so he sold them to a women named Anne Lockton. Isabel was a slave that was strictly told what to do by Madam (Anne Lockton). Isabel goes through hard times and learns how to escape over time. Isabell escape by crossing the river with one of her friends.
Isabel was a perseverant slave and worked hard for her rights. Isabel had lots of chores, some were inside and some were outside. She used to bring leftovers to a jail but it was really so she could talk to her friend. Madam found out and banned her to go to the jail. Isabel got another job to get water from the well. When she would go to the well she would yell her friend's name through the window to get his attention to talk to him. Isabel pushed through all the hard work which lead to her escape.

Chains has many different aspects, all of which lead to one point. Slavery. The whole book is about slavery. A girl who is traded from owner to owner. Her sister who is traded from owner to owner. They have no freedom! They became slaves because their parents died, that is unfortunate, but the shouldn’t become slaves because there parents died. It’s not their fault! It’s not right, just because someone is less fortunate than you they become a slave? Slavery is wrong and it is shown why in Chains.
The things that were done to slaves were unacceptable, proven in Chains. First off, they treated them like they were less than dogs! They would beat them and only feed them rations and scraps; only enough to barely stay alive! Also what happens to “Sal” is crazy. When she did something wrong, she was branded with the letter I on her cheek standing for Insolence! Another time Mrs. Lockton actually got so mad that she slammed a picture frame at “Sal”! Slavery is terrible, and Chains shows why.
Overall Chains is a very intense but interesting book. First of all, the whole book is about a slave escaping to freedom, which is very intense. And it is in the middle of a war so there is much blood and fighting, which is intense. It is interesting because of all of the action and constant problems and trouble. The action is intense as well as interesting which makes the book good. When “Sal” is running away and being chased and gets branded is one of the best parts because it is so intense! So while being intense this book also succeeds in being interesting. It makes you have feeling for the book! It get you excited but also sad. That’s just what I like.

Chains started out as a book that would seem completely depressing. The first bit is about one of their owners dying and her will (you'd think) with her, and part of the will is them being free. Then they are sold to this really awful couple instead of their, now deceased parents, nice, old owners.the book was mostly about war and the right owner, And tracking Down the man with their old owners will. The book was kind of lacking action until the war parts and the parts where maybe someone would be free. Then the book would make you lose interest again.
I feel like the author was or had a friend who was put through this life because she spoke as if it were her life story. She also made you feel as if you were witnessing the life of this slave yourself. I liked how every chapter there was a quote that related to it like
Youth is the seed time of good habits, As well in nations as in individuals. Chains could be more enlightening and interesting. The grammar wasn't very good either like: tho/though et/ate morrow/tomorrow. This book was half and half action packed and really boring. I would only suggest his book for like a road trip or plane/train trip entertainment.

Isabel and Ruth were slaves. They were very fortunate to work for a Master who was kind to them. They had worked there a long time, but then something bad happened. Their Master had gotten very ill. After the illness, the Master died. A relative had taken them and sold them. To people who were unspeakable, the Locktons.
The two girls had worked in the Lockton house for quite a while now. One morning, Isabel had gone out to do her chores. Isabel does her chores until night. When she came back, Madam Lockton was acting unusually kind. Madam Lockton gave Isabel a sweet cocoa drink. But what Isabel didn’t know, was that it was a sleeping potion. After Isabel had fallen asleep, Madam Lockton sent Ruth away!
When Isabel woke, she realised what happened. She was a slave so she still had to keep working even when she was devastated. As she was working she met a boy named Curzon, little did she know, he was going to help her do the impossible. A few months after that, she found out that Curzon was imprisoned, she had to help.
Every day, Isabel would bring scraps to the prisoners. To get in she acted as Curzons brother. Every day, Curson was getting weaker. So Isabel wanted him to get out of prison. She acted as if he was dead and brought him out to “bury” him. Then she got on a boat docked on the Hudson river, and she crossed her river Jordan.
I would give this book 4 stars because it was interesting to read but intense to read sometimes. I would recommend it for older kids because there are some harsh parts that younger kids would have a hard time understanding.

When Ruth was just a baby, mama and papa and Isabel and baby Ruth were being auctioned, Papa begged and begged for them all to stay together. Mama, baby Ruth and Isabel were all taken to Rhode island and papa was taken somewhere else. They were all split up. Soon after that mama got the smallpox and died.
Next there Master died and they were left with the husband. Now the husband was a very cruel man and sold Ruth and Isabel to this very mean family named the Locktons. The first day that Isabel and Ruth got to New York, Ruth laughed because Madam lockton was sitting on her own trunk full of stolen money and lady linens. The Army was going to check it and she new that if they found the money that Master lockton would go to jail. So after awhile of sitting on the chest the Army finally allowed her to take the trunk home and the locktons got away with their first crime. Isabel got slashed across the face because of that. This was not the end of her slashes, its only the beginning.
Isabel made a new friend that day because Madam lockton told Isabel to go get some water. Isabel of course didn’t know where the water pump was so a boy named Curzon helped her find it. Curzon and Isabel became friends. Since Ruth was a baby she would have seizures. Ruth had another seizure in front of haner d as cruel as she is, Madam took the broom and wacked Ruth with it yelling ‘get out demon’ over and over again. Isabel jumped on top of Ruth so she wouldn’t get whacked so much and Isabel got most of the wacks. Madam said that Ruth would soon be sold. At this information Isabel grew ablaze with anger.
Soon after Madam said this, Madam baked fresh cookies and milk but Madam was sneaky and put a sleeping potion in the milk which made Isabel fall asleep very quick. When Isabel woke up, Ruth was nowhere to be found. Isabel asked the maid where Ruth was and she said nothing. She just lowered her head and that was enough to tell Isabel that Madam sold Ruth. Later on Curzon went to war with George Washington against the British. The British invaded and captured thousands of men and boys, including Curzon. They were all put in the cells. When Isabel saw Curzon and he had a bandage wrapped around his leg. It was clear that he got shot in the leg.
Soon Isabel started bringing food to the prison. When Isabella saw him that time he was almost dead. He was very skinny and bonny. The last time she saw him was when she found out that Ruth was alive and she went to save him from dying. Isabel was on her way to go get Ruth and save her to. Isabel went to get him to save him and because she thought that she needed to repay him for always being there for her even if she didn’t appreciate it. They got into a boat and they both fell asleep and when they woke up they crossed the River Jordan. Isabel was so happy and so was Curzon but he didn’t have enough energy to rejoice. And that's how they became free slaves!

Chains is part of a trilogy that takes place during the Revolutionary War. It is full of Isabel’s emotions that are good, and bad. Isabel has lived with her sister Ruth, her whole life. They have always been working together with their mother. When their mother dies, they go to Miss Mary Finch's house. Miss Finch says that they can have freedom when she dies. But when she does, they don't get freed. Instead, they get shipped off to New York City to work for a moody couple, the Locktons. They learn new things everyday, some causing joy, and some causing mourning, and struggle through the consequences of disobedience. But as they work, only one thought lingers with Isabel: Freedom. Throughout the war, Isabel loses friends and gains them. But through it all, Isabel stays strong, humble, and fearless. She learns that there is only one way to Freedom: Courage.
Although this book was violent, it also helped me to understand the Revolutionary War better. For the most part, the book kept me interested and I felt as though I was in the book, witnessing the scenes that happened. I would recommend this book to only ten year olds and up because some of the violent scenes were described with too much detail. Overall, This book was wonderful and I am looking forward to reading Forge.

Throughout the story, Madam really proves some awful characteristics of hers, including her deceptiveness. First of all, she managed to persuade Becky, the servant, that she was truly being kind when she gave them all good food and a night’s off, so Becky managed to persuade Isabel. Her real plan, though, was to drug Isabel so she could sell Ruth, her sister, whom she most definitely loved most of all in her life, away from Isabel. Then, as if to make it worse, she let Isabel believe that she had sold Ruth to the islands; Nevis, to be exact. In truth, she had sent her to a different property that she owned. Isabel says, when she found out she had been sold, “I wanted to grab her by the hair and throw her down the stairs, throw her out the window, beat her face with my fists. I wanted her blood to splash the paintings, soak the wall and the wooden stairs.” Of course, Madam crashed a painting on her head, and brought it to court, and told the judge Isabel had “violated the person of her master, destroyed valuable property, and attempted to run away”, when really, Isabel hadn’t done anything except walk toward her, then run away when Madam attacked her. Madam is deceptive; she certainly isn’t afraid to lie.
Another example of one of Madam’s worse traits is her cruelty. One time, Ruth giggled at her, unknowing that it was sure to bring a punishment. Isabel took the blame, and this is what she tells us what happened: “Craaack! Lightning struck from a blue sky; Madam slapped my face so hard it near threw me to the ground. The sound echoed off the stone-faced buildings. Ruth grabbed at my skirts and helped me to stand again. She was confused but kept her mouth closed, thank heavens.” Another demonstration of her cruelty is when she branded Isabel, instead of the suggested, far lesser punishment, whipping. Though, having her whipped would have proved her cruelty as well. And now… here’s the big one: She. Separated. Isabel. From. Ruth! They clearly both loved each other more than the world, and had always been together. She also did it because Ruth was “slow”. Who does that because they think someone else isn’t smart? It almost seemed like Madam liked being a cruel person. She probably did.
As if being deceptive and cruel isn’t enough, Madam goes even further to show how selfish she is. For one, she has absolutely NO compassion for her husband’s aunt. This is proved partly when she “was not pleased with the arrangement but said nothing, for a change.” The arrangement was that her severely injured husband’s aunt was sleeping in the bed that she and her husband usually shared. For another thing, she throws tantrums when her husband doesn’t give her what she wants. She’s thrown things across the room, and yelled at him. Okay, that’s all selfish, but that’s nothing compared to this one. She owns slaves. Anyone who owns slaves is doing the most selfish thing I can think of; taking someone else’s life so you can have a better, more comfortable one. Really, although one could find much more, does one really need more proof that Madam is selfish than this?

Well the girls were supposed to be free Mr. Roberts but Mr.Roberts didn't care. He even saw the paperwork that said they were free people even though he should have have seen that a long time ago. The girls tried to tell the pale skin man Mr.Roberts he told the girl hush with a low Cunard like they were dogs.
Leaving to auction
Well the girls prepare to leave to the auction they thought maybe we can run and he won't find us. But it was no use Mr.Robert standing outside with his shotgun and with the horse ready to go. The girls couldn't really bring anything Evan things that were close to them like mother's belongings that she left behind before she died and fathers thing he made. Trying to communicate with mother communicate the dyed throw the fog it was no use trying to find a way so the can get out of this problem.

The two girl stood there in manic thinking is the would be apart if sold to a new mater. Looking around and seeing a milking skin girl holding a platter of food for for the white skinned people with clean rich clean clothing the girl wished they had. Looking at the girl thinking that she look look for Milyer to their eye. Mr. Roberts talking to the milky skinned girl asking if the girls were hungry. Mr.Roberts said I fed them today probably lying the girl took the two girls to the back and gave them food the seventh actually new the girl's parents.

Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson is a historical book that can teach you about the rough treatment of slaves. The author uses descriptive words that help the reader feel as if he/she is the main character. The cover of the book depicts a young girl who is chained. I think this symbolizes slavery. There are also two birds on the cover, one is wearing the British flag and the other is wearing the American flag. I think the birds look like they are both trying to free the girl. Chains is historical fiction, the main characters were not real people, but they are based on real people who were slaves during the Revolutionary War. Even though this was an assigned book, I found that I really enjoyed it. It has made me want to read more historical fiction.
The beginning of the book is set in rural Massachusetts. The majority of the book is set in New York City. At the end of the book the main characters arrive in New Jersey. The events of the book take place in the years 1776 and 1777. During these years the Revolutionary War is taking place in the American colonies. The British army is trying to destroy the American rebellion. Life is hard in New York City for everyone, but especially slaves of Loyalists, because slaves were treated very harshly by their owners. I think Laurie Halse Anderson chose to set her book during the Revolutionary War because her ancestors fought as soldiers in the Revolutionary War. I believe that Laurie Halse Anderson choose a good setting for her book because the Revolutionary War was a very intriguing time in American history.
The main characters of the book are Isabel and Ruth. Isabel is a young slave girl who is brave and a good leader. Ruth is Isabel’s younger sister. She suffers from a seizure disorder. Ruth is considered “simple minded,” but she is sweet and childish. The other important characters are Curzon and Mr. and Mrs. Lockton. Curzon wears a floppy red hat and he offers to help Isabel and Ruth. He is a patriot and he wants to help the rebel cause. Mr. and Mrs. Lockton are the villains of this story. They are loyalists who want to help the King and harm the rebel forces. They are also very wealthy. Ruth is my favorite character because she is someone who has rough things to go through, but she perseveres. She is able to stay positive even though bad things are happening all around her.
Chains has many themes within its pages. One of the main themes is freedom and independence. This theme is seen by Isabel’s efforts to become free and get back home with Ruth. Freedom is also seen by the efforts of the American rebel forces who want to gain freedom from the British King. Throughout the book, Isabel is working towards her goal of freedom with Ruth. She is determined to do anything, even if it is dangerous, to gain her independence. The American officers and soldiers are just as determined as Isabel to gain independence for the American colonies. All of the characters are on a quest for freedom. At the beginning of the book Isabel and Ruth’s owner dies and they are sold to the Lockton’s in Massachusetts. The Lockton’s take the girls to their home in New York City to work as slaves. The Lockton’s mistreat Isabel and Ruth. When they arrive in New York City, Isabel meets Curzon and he tells her that he wants to help her and she should spy on Mr. Lockton. Isabel takes Curzon’s advise and she delivers information about Mr. Lockton to the American army. In the middle of the book Isabel continues to spy for the American army and tries to gain her freedom.
I really enjoyed reading Chains because I like books that have lots of twists and turns, but the characters find their ways. This book made me feel intrigued because it was suspenseful. It also made me question a lot of things, such as why slavery existed. I also wondered if life would have been better in the 1700’s if slavery did not exist. I would recommend this book to my friends because it is intense and exciting. Chains is a very important book because it teaches you about slavery and it makes you feel thankful that we don’t have slavery today.

Ruth is considered “simple minded,” but she is sweet and childish. The other important characters are Curzon and Mr. and Mrs. Lockton. Curzon wears a floppy red hat and he offers to help Isabel and Ruth. He is a patriot and he wants to help the rebel cause. Mr. and Mrs. Lockton are the villains of this story. They are loyalists who want to help the King and harm the rebel forces. They are also very wealthy. Ruth is my favorite character because she is someone who has rough things to go through, but she perseveres. She is able to stay positive even though bad things are happening all around her.
Chains has many themes within its pages. One of the main themes is freedom and independence. This theme is seen by Isabel’s efforts to become free and get back home with Ruth. Freedom is also seen by the efforts of the American rebel forces who want to gain freedom from the British King. Throughout the book, Isabel is working towards her goal of freedom with Ruth. She is determined to do anything, even if it is dangerous, to gain her independence. The American officers and soldiers are just as determined as Isabel to gain independence for the American colonies. All of the characters are on a quest for freedom. At the beginning of the book Isabel and Ruth’s owner dies and they are sold to the Lockton’s in Massachusetts. The Lockton’s take the girls to their home in New York City to work as slaves. The Lockton’s mistreat Isabel and Ruth. When they arrive in New York City, Isabel meets Curzon and he tells her that he wants to help her and she should spy on Mr. Lockton. Isabel takes Curzon’s advise and she delivers information about Mr. Lockton to the American army. In the middle of the book Isabel continues to spy for the American army and tries to gain her freedom.
I really enjoyed reading Chains because I like books that have lots of twists and turns, but the characters find their ways. This book made me feel intrigued because it was suspenseful. It also made me question a lot of things, such as why slavery existed. I also wondered if life would have been better in the 1700’s if slavery did not exist. I would recommend this book to my friends because it is intense and exciting. Chains is a very important book because it teaches you about slavery and it makes you feel thankful that we don’t have slavery today.
