The Great Women of NY

Last week Monday, students in grades 6-8 went into the city to learn about famous women who shaped it. The 6-8 graders split into two large groups to explore parts of the city. Each group was guided to city landmarks and places that were influenced by women. These places included Trinity Church and Cemetery, Ellis Island, The Statue of Liberty, and the 9/11 Memorial Site.

Below: A group of students listened to the story of Elizabeth Ann Seton as they stood in front of a church built in her honor. 

Students also visited the "Charging Bull" and "Fearless Girl" statues on Wall Street. Students learned that the "Fearless Girl" will be moved to a new location soon. People swarmed these statues, but one group managed to squeeze in for a picture!

As students looked across the water to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, they listened to a story about Emma Lazarus, who wrote the famous poem on the base of the statue. 

Here are a few lines from the poem "The New Colossus:" 

“Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
