On November 8, students in grades seven and eight will present original sound poems based on Aesop's Fables in a Composer Showcase concert. The world premiere of their compositions will be be the format for this year's Music Exhibition. Sixth grade students are working on a composition that they will present to their classmates in music class.
Working in partners, students chose a fable from a collection of Aesop's Fables
online from the Library of Congress. After studying the fable, students completed a planning sheet to brainstorm ways to represent their fable in sound.

Students then began using an online music notation software called
Noteflight to choose instruments to represent characters and events in their story. They then began composing eight-measure musical themes to further represent characters and events in the story. As they continue to develop their compositions, students are composing rhythmic and melodic ostinatos (repeated musical patterns) that can serve as accompanimental material.
Students will complete their compositions by combining material they've composed and by creating new material to complete a musical setting of their fable.
