Happy New Year, Eighth Grade!
Welcome back to school! Here's a look at what eighth graders will be studying this winter.
Math
Eighth grade students are beginning an extended study of linear equations -- equations where the variable is not squared, cubed, or raised to any power other than one. This work will be accompanied by an extensive use of the cartesian plane and graphing.
Social Studies
What makes a human being human? What features of the way of life of modern humans before 10,000 years ago paved the way for the emergence of the complex societies, or civilizations? What makes our species so different? These are some of the questions we will be exploring in social studies this term as we study the time period from when homo sapiens emerged to the beginning of the agricultural revolution.
Science
In this term, students will explore our Solar System and the different planetary bodies that are part of it. They will then go beyond our Solar System to investigate our galaxy and galaxies in general and finally the Universe as a whole.
Reading
Students will begin reading Orbiting Jupiter by Gary Schmidt. While we read, we will determine ideas for central themes and focus on the development of the two main characters.
Writing
Writing
After reading Orbiting Jupiter, students will write an argumentative essay. They will make a claim and support it through evidence. Students will use phrases, words and clauses to clarify relationships between their claim and the evidence, all while maintaining a formal style.
