A School That Travels!
As I write this, I must admit that most of these words are borrowed -- from Shanna Pargellis, one of the founders of our school and Director of the Early Childhood Division. These words speak from a long and growing tradition.
We are a school that travels! From the very first year of the school’s existence, Mustard Seed students have been taking trips nearly every month of the year -- within Hoboken, into New York, and, at times, further abroad.
In just about ten days, the 8th grade will be traveling to the Morgan Library. Soon afterwards, all of the middle school will go to Spruce Lake Outdoor Education Camp, fourth and fifth grade students begin the Farm Trip. Grades 2 & 3 will have walked the length and breadth of Hoboken by end of the month and the entire Lower School will walk along the Hudson River, just as they do every year. While not all classes go on a trip every month, that is a goal for most. Trips are just not optional here, they are essential to fulfill our mission “to stimulate and broaden the experiences of city children”. Check here to see some wonderful moments!
Now, let me tell you a bit more about our 8th grade trip that will take place next week. On Friday, September 19, the 8th grade class will be be taking a “Trip with the Director” to the Morgan Library in Manhattan. Along with Mr. Choi, Mr. Lawrence, and me, our graduating class will tour the Marks of Genius Exhibit and kick off their year long study of genius, faith, and imagination. This trip is only the beginning. For once they return, each 8th grade student will follow the visit with personal research and study. Finally, in December, 8th grade students who have become, each in their own way, an expert on certain “marks of genius” will share that learning with others by leading mini-term courses or by interning in lower school classrooms. It won’t be long, then, until their Eighth Grade trip with the Director will become a lesson for everyone.
