A fresh perspective on study habits

With the start of the new calendar year, we all have many hopes for the new year. Perhaps we have made a series of resolutions. Perhaps we have promised to "turn over a new leaf" and finally complete that project we've been meaning to finish for a while now. In a way, the return from Christmas Break is similar to the first six weeks of school. This is the time when we need to remember how we transition between spaces. We often need to be reminded of routines that were second nature a mere two weeks ago but are now a bit dusty in our minds.

This is to be expected.

This is January.

This time, which is so reminiscent of the first six weeks of school, provides a perfect opportunity for middle school students to reassess their organizational strategies. Planners, calendars, and organizational strategies are all visible in the classroom, but there are also many things that middle school students can try at home to help them develop organizational systems that will work well for them.

Here are a few tips that middle school students can try at home as they are working toward greater independence and responsibility.

Study Habits:

  • Take a 10 minute break after school to have a snack, go for a walk, or to have a brief conversation with friends or family.
  • Design a special working space at home that is free of distractions and noise. Make it your own!
  • Put your phone away.
  • Turn the tv off.
  • Find a go-to person from your class to ask if you have questions about what homework was assigned.
  • Set a goal for when you would like to be finished so that you are motivated to stay focused.
  • Divide your work into manageable chunks.
Organizational Habits:
  • Go through your backpack once a week and clean out any unnecessary papers, books, or food items.
  • Pack your backpack before you go to bed at night to save time in the morning.
  • Make a checklist you can use in the morning to make sure you have everything you need for the day. Don't forget to note what you need for after school activities.
  • Bring your planner to school every day, and check the blog for homework assignments.
