Memorial : something designed to preserve the memory of a person, event, etc., as a monument or a holiday.
This term in art, middle school students are reflecting on memorials.
In pairs, students research, and create a presentation about, local, national and international memorials. They share experiences of visiting the 9/11 memorial and the National Mall in Washington D.C.
Did you know Church Square Park contains three memorials? A statue of the radio pioneer Marconi, the Firemen's Monument, and a relief sculpture of the Four Chaplains who gave their lives to save others in WWII. This research exposes students to many different styles and methods of memorializing people and events in different cultures and countries, and inspires their own designs.
As we continue in the project, students will choose a subject for the memorial they design. Seventh grade students will create an artifact for the subject of their History Exhibition. Students will design a memorial and build a maquette (small 3D model) in clay.
