Wonder and delight...in 5-7-5

and helps you see more deeply
the sights around you?
Do you enjoy writing? Some students love to “paint” with words and others find it a bit daunting. The simple 5-7-5 syllable structure of haikus helps emerging Spanish writers communicate their wonderings, express their knowledge and paint a picture with just a few words. Descriptive writing, peer editing, and counting syllables --which promotes excellent pronunciation---are giving students an opportunity to review their research and create a beautiful image. Students describe what they see and express their wonder.
Below are the poems of the current 6th and 7th graders. They are getting ready to illustrate their poems as we explore watercolor, el acuarela and printmaking, el grabado con tinta.

Students in the 8th grade are getting a taste of new foods and new cultural perspectives
with "tapas en la clase de español."
la tortilla española
When I was little, my family and I lived in Madrid. My mom learned to make tortilla española from our Spaniard neighbors. We lived in a beautiful flat in the center of the city. My mom says that at 9pm, you could open your window and hear women everywhere frying sliced onions and potatoes in olive oil for their tortillas. She called it "Sinfonia de tortilla española." (Tortilla Symphony). The tortilla española is a staple in Spain which is eaten all day long
...hot or at room temperature and even cold.
In 8th Grade students are tasting a few typical Spanish. In the last few weeks we tasted el gazpacho and la tortilla española. Our class made gazpacho andaluz. Students were encouraged to try the "cold soup" as well as help create it while describing the process en español.
