A New Era: Music Exhibition 2016
Two weeks ago, middle school students brought their laptops to music class. As they logged on to the program Noteflight for the first time, they spoke in excited tones. “It is the beginning of a new era!” one student exclaimed as he began to compose music.
On October 12, students in grades seven and eight will begin an eight week journey to compose and perform music in collaboration with students in grade six. They will work in teams and will use Aesop’s Fables or stories from the Bible as inspirations for their compositions. The use of these ancient texts is in anticipation of their upcoming study of ancient civilizations.
As students work together to create their masterpieces, they will explore elements of music including rhythm, melody, texture, form, and timbre. They will plan, experiment, draft, edit, refine, and ultimately print a musical score using the program Noteflight. Using instruments from school and home, they will rehearse and perform their composition as part of the music exhibition world premiere concert on Tuesday, November 15* (mark your calendar!).
Does this sound like a challenge? It is! Middle school students need big challenges and exciting work. They need to climb the mountain that seems impossible and conquer assignments that are difficult. Don’t worry. They are prepared for this work. The music exhibition is designed to accommodate students of all musical abilities. Over the next eight weeks, we will break this project down into manageable pieces that will fit together to create a significant achievement. I can’t wait to hear their compositions!
