MAP Testing and more!

During the week of January 22nd, students in grades 4-8 will take the MAP^® Growth™ test from NWEA^® on a computer. We give students MAP Growth tests to determine their instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year (and from year to year) in reading and math. 

Students will take the MAP test during their normal math and reading instructional periods. Though the test is not timed, each test takes an average of sixty minutes to complete. Students will take one-two days for each subject. 

Tuesday: Reading MAP (during the usual reading block)
Wednesday: Math MAP (during the usual math block)

Make ups will take place on Thursday and Friday if needed. 

How should students prepare for these testing days?  

The answer is this.  Students who are on time, well rested, energized, and encouraged are, generally speaking, students who have the focus, energy, and stamina to do well.  Children who have the most trouble with testing are children who are tired, hungry, hurried, distracted, or discouraged.  This means that the most significant actions that will help a child perform at his or her best are a regular and early bedtime, a nourishing breakfast, and family and classroom conversations that encourage a student's spirit each day.  

How can you help?
- Share encouraging words like- "Try your best!" "Take your time." "You got this."
- Ask them how they felt when they were finished. 
- Ask them their opinions about the test.
