Math Exhibitions 2019

This Thursday, May 9, the eighth grade students will present their math exhibitions for 2019.  The exhibition is a chance for students to deeply research a topic of their choosing, deliver a 10 - 20 minute talk, and field questions from an audience of 6 - 8 grade teammates as well as parents and Mustard Seed teachers and staff.

This year's class has chosen an array of fascinating topics.  Visitors on Thursday might hear one student speak about Zeno's paradoxes.

Another student will solve a problem about Aquaman's swimming rate through the city's stormdrains (using simultaneous linear equations).

Many of us will want to learn how Descartes' development of the coordinate plane brought unity to the disciplines of geometry and algebra.  This picture below (from one student's exhibition) unites the geometry of the unit circle with the very elegant algebraic equation:

This picture also points to the development of all the trigonometric functions, a topic all these students will study in high school.

And for the automotive fans among us, one student will talk about the connection between torque and horsepower.
