Seasons, Eclipses, Phases and Teamwork

What causes the seasons?  What is the difference between a lunar eclipse and a solar eclipse?  What are the different phases of the moon?  What is the difference between eclipses and phases?

Using models of the earth, sun and moon, the 8th grade students work with each other to find out the answers to these questions.  Tinkering with physical objects help students overcome some common misconceptions and create several "a-ha" moments during class.  Working together in groups also allows students to use their different gifts to accomplish a common goal.

As the year progresses and students are placed into teams, the 8th graders will have opportunities to lead the younger students in collaborative work.  However in this early part of the year, they are taking time practicing being in groups and working with one another in a productive manner building on their strengths and identifying areas that need growth.
