Art Exhibition and Reader's Workshop
This year for their Art Exhibition, the seventh and eighth grade will be illustrating their summer read, Dark Sons by Nikki Grimes. The free-verse poetry contrasts the story of two boys from very different times, living similar experiences. Ishmael and Sam's stories share their struggles with family, loss, and faith.
In art class, students evaluated book illustrations using the principles of design as their criteria. In Reader's Workshop, Mrs. Rachuri and Mr. Harris helped the eighth graders lead a study of the book's vocabulary, figurative language, and inferencing to help the students gain a deeper understanding of the text.
Eighth grade students worked in partnerships to clarify a section of the book for sixth and seventh grade students. The goal was to create a tool to help the younger students understand the difficult vocabulary, context, and emotions of the book. Their work was combined into a packet for all students to use as an aid for understanding. All students completed graphic organizers delving into their chosen passage's emotions, setting and characters.

Your child will be working on thumbnail sketch ideas for each passage. Then they will refine their best idea, adding detail and color, if needed. Some of this work will happen at home and some in art class. After Spruce Lake we will begin the final pieces and there will be dedicated time after school for students who wish to use the art room facilities.
Eighth grade students will produce two illustrations and a book jacket.
Seventh grade students will produce three illustrations.
Sixth grade students, not included in the exhibition, will also produce two illustrations.
The students have a wide choice of media available: pencil, charcoal, color pencil, paint, watercolor, collage, printing.
We look forward to seeing the student's imagination bring to life the text in their illustrations and plan an exhibition of their art work.
