6th Grade Class Covenant
When we created our class covenant in the fall, students knew it would be hard work. In fact, many students wanted to do it "how we've always done it" in hopes that the process would be over quickly. They wanted to use the words and ideas from former covenants. Other students were invested in the opportunity of making a set of guidelines that reflected their ideas and desires as sixth graders.
Students read Bible verses, made lists, performed skits, worked together to refine their ideas, and debated. They finally came up with a covenant they were all willing to sign. In doing so, each student promised to try to walk it out as best as they could.
Our final product has five main ideas:

- Forgiveness
- Thankfulness
- Upstanding
- Respect
- Acceptance
We recently checked in about how we're applying these five ideas to our daily school life.
Overwhelmingly, the class agreed that they're doing very well accepting one another and accepting new ideas. How exciting that students recognize this! As we move into our memoir unit, this acceptance will help students feel more comfortable sharing their stories.
And the class overwhelmingly agreed that they need to work on respect. You may have noticed that sixth graders have strong opinions! And those opinions are not always shared respectfully.
Students are working to recognize those moments when they are not showing respect to themselves, their peers, their teachers, and their materials. Our next work as a class is to share ideas and practice ways to be respectful even when it's hard.
